When purchasing industrial lifting equipment, it can be tempting to automatically choose the largest or most recognizable manufacturer. Bigger companies often have extensive catalogs, large distribution networks, and thousands of products available.
But bigger doesn’t always mean better—especially when you’re purchasing equipment responsible for safely lifting thousands of pounds.
For specialized equipment such as an aluminum gantry crane, the manufacturer’s engineering experience, material quality, fabrication process, testing, and ability to understand your application can be far more important than the size of its catalog.
At EC&MW, we believe in quality over quantity. Instead of trying to manufacture every type of industrial equipment imaginable, we have spent decades specializing in portable aluminum gantry cranes and custom lifting solutions.
You’re Buying a Crane, Not Just a Product Number
Large industrial manufacturers have an obvious advantage: scale.
They can manufacture large quantities of standardized products and distribute them through numerous channels. If your application fits perfectly within the specifications of one of those products, that may work well.
The problem begins when your lifting application isn’t standard.
Maybe you have limited overhead clearance. Perhaps your crane needs to pass through a specific doorway. You may need an unusual span, a particular Height Under Beam (HUB), special casters, greater portability, or the ability to operate in an environment where conventional equipment isn’t practical.
At that point, selecting a crane from a catalog based primarily on capacity isn’t necessarily the best solution.
EC&MW manufactures numerous configurations of portable aluminum gantry cranes, but we also recognize that sometimes the right crane simply doesn’t exist yet.
That’s when custom manufacturing becomes important.
Smaller Manufacturers Can Focus on the Application
One of the biggest advantages of working with a specialized manufacturer is the ability to discuss what you’re actually trying to accomplish.
What are you lifting? How heavy is it? How high does it need to go? How much room do you have? Does the crane need to roll while loaded? Will it be transported between jobsites? What type of surface will it operate on?
Those details matter.
Rather than forcing an unusual application into an existing product configuration, EC&MW can work with customers to develop a custom aluminum gantry crane designed around the project’s actual requirements.
Sometimes that requires major customization. Other times, a relatively small change to an existing design can make the crane significantly more useful for the customer’s application.
Quality Over Quantity Matters in Lifting Equipment
There are products where mass production makes perfect sense.
Industrial lifting equipment deserves a little more consideration.
A gantry crane may be responsible for lifting a motor, pump, HVAC unit, piece of manufacturing equipment, stone sculpture, marine engine, or extremely valuable piece of specialized machinery.
The consequences of poor manufacturing can be substantial.
That’s why EC&MW focuses heavily on how our cranes are engineered and manufactured. Our gantries are professionally engineered, and our aluminum cranes are welded by certified aluminum welders.
We use semi-automated and CNC equipment in our fabrication process to help maintain accuracy and repeatability.
You can learn more about what goes into our cranes on the EC&MW Difference page.
Experience That Comes From Actually Using Gantry Cranes
There is another major difference between manufacturing a product and understanding how that product is actually used.
EC&MW’s designs are backed by decades of machinery moving and rigging experience.
Before we manufactured gantry cranes, we used lifting and rigging equipment in real-world applications.
That experience changes how you approach design.
A specification sheet may tell you whether a crane can support a certain amount of weight. Field experience teaches you about assembly, transportation, caster movement, clearance, stability, positioning, disassembly, and all the small details that can determine whether equipment is practical once it reaches the jobsite.
Our approach to manufacturing has always been influenced by a simple question:
Would we want to use this crane ourselves?
Innovation Is Easier When You’re Willing to Build Something Different
Smaller manufacturers can also have an advantage when a customer presents an unusual problem.
Instead of saying, “We don’t make that,” the conversation can become, “How can we make that work?”
EC&MW has been developing specialized gantry designs for decades. Our custom gantry projects demonstrate just how different one lifting application can be from another.
One project, for example, required a 4,000-pound aluminum gantry crane with a top-mounted electric winch. Meeting the customer’s requirements required modifications to the winch drum, wire rope configuration, beam design, and other components.
That’s not simply selecting another SKU.
It’s engineering a solution.
Made in the USA Means More Than a Label
EC&MW manufactures our gantry cranes at our facility in Elko, Nevada.
For customers comparing domestic equipment with lower-cost imported alternatives, it’s important to look beyond the initial purchase price.
Material quality, manufacturing consistency, engineering support, replacement components, documentation, longevity, and service can all affect the crane’s actual cost over its usable life.
We’ve discussed these differences further in our comparison of USA-made gantry cranes vs. overseas imports.
A cheaper crane isn’t necessarily less expensive if it doesn’t provide the performance, durability, or support your operation requires.
You’re More Than an Order Number
Perhaps one of the most overlooked advantages of working with a smaller manufacturer is communication.
When customers contact EC&MW with an unusual application, we want to understand the project.
Sometimes we’ll recommend one of our existing gantries. Sometimes we’ll suggest a different configuration than the customer originally considered. And sometimes we’ll determine that a completely custom solution makes the most sense.
That direct relationship becomes especially valuable when engineers, purchasing departments, facility managers, maintenance teams, and operators all have different requirements that must be incorporated into one crane.
We aren’t interested in selling you the biggest crane we can.
We’re interested in building the right crane for the job.
Smaller Manufacturer Doesn’t Mean Fewer Options
Choosing a specialized manufacturer doesn’t necessarily mean sacrificing selection.
EC&MW manufactures multiple types of aluminum gantry cranes for different applications, including:
- A-Frame gantries
- T-Frame gantries
- All-Terrain gantries
- Air pneumatic tire gantries
- Removable-leg gantries
- Doorway gantries
- P-Model gantries
- Custom aluminum gantries
Our A-Frame aluminum gantry cranes, for example, provide a versatile option for numerous industrial lifting applications.
The difference is that our product line remains focused on what we know: portable lifting equipment and aluminum gantry cranes.
The Biggest Brand Isn’t Always the Best Fit
There are excellent large gantry crane manufacturers in the industry, and there are applications where their equipment may be the right choice.
But brand size shouldn’t be the deciding factor.
When comparing the best gantry crane manufacturers, look deeper than the company name.
Consider who manufactures the crane, where it is built, the materials being used, how it is engineered, whether customization is available, what documentation can be provided, and whether the manufacturer understands your actual lifting application.
For EC&MW, being a specialized manufacturer allows us to concentrate on the details.
Quality over quantity. Engineering over mass production. The right crane instead of simply the closest model in a catalog.
Since 1997, EC&MW has manufactured American-made aluminum gantry cranes for customers across industrial, utility, HVAC, wastewater, marine, manufacturing, construction, and other specialized industries.
If you need a standard crane, we manufacture a wide range of configurations. If your lifting challenge doesn’t fit into a standard model, that’s where our experience with custom solutions becomes especially valuable.
