Custom Rooftop Aluminum Gantry Crane for Coastal Maintenance Applications
This fixed-height, 1,000-pound-capacity aluminum gantry crane was custom-engineered and manufactured to meet the customer’s specific rooftop maintenance requirements. Unlike most EC&MW aluminum gantry cranes, which are constructed from high-strength 6061-T6 structural aluminum, this crane was fabricated almost entirely from 6063 structural aluminum, with the exception of the aluminum I-beam.
Although 6063 is a structural aluminum alloy, it does not offer the same strength as 6061-T6. So why was 6063 selected? The answer lies in the crane’s operating environment. Material selection was driven by long-term corrosion resistance rather than maximum structural strength, making 6063 the ideal choice for this dedicated rooftop maintenance crane.
Project Requirements
The customer required a permanent rooftop lifting solution that would:
- Provide a safe 1,000-pound lifting capacity.
- Remain permanently installed on the rooftop.
- Require minimal maintenance throughout its service life.
- Withstand continuous exposure to Seattle’s coastal climate.
- Offer exceptional corrosion resistance in a marine environment.
Material Selection
This gantry crane remains in a permanent rooftop location in Seattle, Washington, where it serves as a dedicated maintenance crane. Because it is not intended to be relocated or routinely washed down, it is continuously exposed to moisture, rain, and salt air common throughout the Pacific Northwest.
For this reason, corrosion resistance became a higher design priority than maximum structural strength. Aluminum alloy 6063 provides superior resistance to atmospheric and marine corrosion compared to 6061-T6, making it the ideal material for this long-term outdoor application.
Custom Lifting Solution
One of the most distinctive features of this crane is the complete elimination of mechanical fasteners within the primary structural frame. No steel hardware was used, eliminating the possibility of rust, galvanic corrosion, or maintenance associated with bolted structural connections.
While 316L stainless steel fasteners could have been incorporated, they would still require periodic inspection and torque verification throughout the crane’s service life. By utilizing a fully welded structural design, EC&MW eliminated these ongoing maintenance requirements, leaving only routine visual inspections.
Enhanced Safety Features
For additional safety, the aluminum I-beam was welded directly to EC&MW’s proprietary top-cap assemblies. These top caps were specifically engineered with an extended capture surface that makes it virtually impossible for the I-beam to become disengaged from the gantry frame, even in the unlikely event of load bounce or dynamic loading.
This design provides an additional level of protection while maintaining the structural integrity and reliability expected from a permanent maintenance crane operating in a demanding industrial environment.
Project Summary
This project demonstrates how selecting the right material for the operating environment can be more important than simply choosing the strongest available alloy. By combining corrosion-resistant 6063 aluminum, an all-welded structural design, and enhanced beam retention features, EC&MW engineered a custom rooftop gantry crane that delivers dependable lifting performance with minimal maintenance, making it ideally suited for long-term coastal applications.
