Portable Workstation Crane for Transformer Handling

Years ago, we developed the concept of a customizable line of workstation cranes with lifting capacities of 500 pounds and greater. Rather than offering a single standard model, each crane is engineered and manufactured to meet each customer’s specific application, workspace, and lifting requirements.

The workstation crane shown here has an overall height of 11 feet 4 inches with 10 feet of clear height under the beam. It was engineered for a customer who needed to lift and position transformers weighing approximately 400 pounds each onto shipping skids and pallets. One of the primary design objectives was to provide full lifting capability while still allowing the crane to roll through a standard warehouse doorway without disassembly. This gave the customer the flexibility to relocate the crane throughout the facility as production requirements changed.

To accommodate standard shipping pallets, the crane was engineered with a clear inside width of 50-1/2 inches between the legs, allowing it to easily straddle a standard 48-inch square pallet. This enabled the operator to position the crane directly over the pallet, making loading and unloading safer, faster, and more efficient.

Unlike many workstation cranes that utilize a simple boom arm, this design features a true structural I-beam as the horizontal lifting member. The 42-inch-long I-beam supports a manual trolley and chain hoist, allowing transformers and other heavy components to travel smoothly along the beam for precise positioning. This provides the operator with excellent control while lifting, moving, and accurately placing each load while maintaining exceptional stability throughout the operation.

The result is a durable, highly versatile workstation crane that combines portability, structural strength, and custom engineering into an efficient material-handling solution.
