Engineered for Granite Sculpting

Unlike many sculptors who purchase stone from commercial suppliers, Brandon works with granite harvested from his own hillside quarry, visible in the background of the photograph above. Beginning with massive blocks of natural granite and transforming them into finished works of art requires lifting equipment capable of safely handling extreme weight while providing complete control throughout every stage of the sculpting process.

Although this crane shares many design characteristics with other EC&MW artist gantries, it was specifically engineered with a 4,000-pound lifting capacity to safely handle both rough granite blocks and completed sculptures.

Despite its increased lifting capacity, the crane remains completely portable. It can be disassembled into manageable components for transportation between the quarry, the studio, and installation sites, allowing a single crane to support every phase of the artist’s workflow.

Built for Uneven Terrain

Years of working with stone sculptors have shown that lifting the artwork is only part of the challenge. Positioning massive pieces accurately while working on uneven ground is equally important.

To meet these demands, this custom gantry crane incorporates:

• Pneumatic air-tire casters

• EC&MW’s crank-down leveling jacks

• Built-in bubble levels

The pneumatic tires allow the unloaded crane to be easily moved across gravel, dirt, grass, and other uneven surfaces before lifting operations begin.

Once positioned, the crank-down leveling jacks are lowered until the crane’s weight is transferred from the wheels to the jacks. This creates a rigid, level lifting platform capable of providing the stability required when handling granite sculptures weighing several thousand pounds.

Whether lifting, rotating, or carefully positioning a finished piece, maintaining a stable foundation is essential for both operator safety and precise load control.

Proven Leveling System Since 2001

EC&MW introduced its crank-down leveling jacks on portable aluminum gantry cranes in March 2001. More than two decades later, they remain one of the company’s most requested options for customers whose work extends beyond smooth concrete floors into outdoor environments where uneven terrain is unavoidable.

Unlike some EC&MW portable aluminum gantry cranes that are engineered to roll while carrying a suspended load, this crane was intentionally designed as a stationary lifting system during operation.

After the leveling jacks have been deployed and the crane has been properly leveled, it becomes a solid working platform that allows the operator to focus entirely on safely lifting, rotating, and positioning heavy sculptures with confidence and precision.
